6 Eco-Friendly Home Gift Ideas to Celebrate Earth Day

We're celebrating Earth Day with this short list of gift ideas for the home! As we reflect on our environmental impact and the ways to employ more sustainable practices, these eco-friendly products have been some of the best ways my family members and me exercise our environmental responsibility. True, there is so much more we can do to reduce our carbon footprint for future generations as climate change grows of increasing importance to address. My hope is that this list of 6 earth day gift ideas help you wherever you are on your journey to increase your own environmental awareness and find ways to make a positive impact within your own sphere of influence.

The list I share below is comprised of 6 of some of the best eco-friendly gifts that you can gift to a friend or for your own home. These are items I personally use everyday and have used for several years now. That said, I know you'll love them too and they are a wonderful starting point in making small changes that yield big impact. Scroll down for the list and click on the links to add these items to your own home today.

Earth Day Gift Idea 1: A Reusable Coffee Filter

I am a coffee lover through and through. After years of using the unbleached filters, this reusable filter from Ovalware has been amazing. Made from stainless steel with a silicone lip, this is a lovely sustainable gift for the coffee lover in your life. No more needing to remember to run to the store to pick up more filters that may or may not be compostable. This is easy to use and easy to clean. This is a great addition to the morning coffee set up.

Earth Day Gift Idea 2: Compost Bin for the Counter

I bought this one as soon as our county began implementing the green waste sorting in the summer of 2023. It looks pretty enough to keep on the counter. It also discretely conceals our food scraps that do not go into the Lomi (more on the Lomi below). The replaceable carbon filter in the lid also helps to reduce unwanted smells. We mostly use this to hold avocado pits and anything else that can’t effectively break down in our countertop composter. For compost bins, this one rocks.

Earth Day Gift Idea 3: Lomi Composter

We bought the first-generation Lomi composter back in June 2023 and I honestly don’t know what took us so long. It’s AMAZING and makes a great gift. Side note: Our lot size is small. While we’re making the most of it in creating our own urban garden, traditional composting can pose a bit of a challenge. With the Lomi Countertop Composter we significantly reduce the amount of food waste our household contributes over the course of a year. I’m currently tracking how much food waste we’re saving in our first year with Lomi. Be on the lookout for that blog post last this summer. Shop either the Classic or Bloom version and save in the Early Mother's Day deals. It's the perfect gift for the home cook or urban gardener.

Earth Day Gift Idea 4: Reusable Wraps

Reusable food wraps means we don’t need to use plastic wrap as much or at all. Made from natural resources and organic cotton with eco-friendly packaging, I love the different sizes available to wrap leftover produce. One of my favorite options is the Bees and Bears print. It looks so lovely when storing halves of onions or avocados in the refrigerator for another day’s use. It's the perfect choice for a variety of food storage products.

Earth Day Gift Idea 5: Silicone Food Storage Bags

Eliminating plastic use has become an bigger goal for us over time. As a result, I've researched for a variety of reusable products that prove an effective way to store leftovers.  These Stasher Bags are great reusable bags to store food in varying sizes without using zipper-like plastic bags. Renewable, dishwasher safe, and easy to clean, these are a staple to have in the sustainable kitchen.

Earth Day Gift Idea 6: Wool Dryer Balls

Designed to last for thousands of loads, these wool dryer balls are an excellent replacement to dryer sheets. I've used these for well over 5 years now and only use a fabric shaver on occasion to remove any gathered pills from the wool. No need to use fabric softeners which can contain synthetics or added chemicals. These are a great way to reduce static and naturally shorten the drying time for a given load of laundry. A bonus tip: add a couple drop of your favorite essential oils to offer a subtle scent.

Final Thoughts & A Note of Encouragement for This Earth Day

I hope some of my favorite Earth Day gift ideas are helpful in crafting your own sustainable materials to gift or bring into your home. While Earth Day is an annual event, it's important to remember our collective efforts in addressing global warming and climate change do not end with a single day. Every small act or practice we can incorporate to address our local and more global environmental issues matters.

From switching to stainless steel water bottles, starting our own butterfly gardens or bee houses, swapping out plastic for reusable containers, to even using reusable shopping bags when at the grocery store, or even volunteering at events like a beach cleanup, every little bit we can do will go a long way to creating a global movement for change and leave our Mother Earth in a better place.
